Seungbin Yang 양 승빈

Hometown: Seoul, South Korea

Lives and Works: Eindoven, Netherlands

Seungbin Yang is a young South Korean designer based in Netherlands. Graduating with a degree in Fine Arts from the Design Academy Eindhoven, his work is shown in many places around Europe. Yangs interest is in making three dimensional objects and spaces which connects to human instincts. He has made a series of paper objects where the traditional Korean lacquering technique was used to strengthen and characterise the material with the touch of craftsmanship.

The traditional Korean lacquering technique Yang has perfected, is made using secretions from the Ott tree and is extremely labour intensive and costly. This has caused the technique to become increasingly rare with Yang left as one of the only artists in practice.

Impressed by the properties of this waterproof, durable, antibacterial and eco-friendly lacquer, as well as its history, Seungbin brings a modern version to the space with his new series 'Simulacre.' Using a paper base instead of wood, what was once luxurious and heavy, has now become light and modern designed for special space. Yang introduces a whole new generation to this age-old craft in this process.
